UFO Over Santa Clarita

Shot October 2012 while driving through Santa Clarita. There were two crafts. After sighting the first I stopped the car and ran into a field for a better look. What happened next was unbelievable.

UPDATE: This video is a hoax directed by Aristomenis (Meni) Tsirbas of MeniThings Productions in partnership with the Gnomon School of Visual Effects. While Meni was responsible for direction, animation and lighting, a crew of talented Gnomon School students were assigned concept design, modeling and texturing for this all-CGI photoreal VFX experiment.

Wolf Sanctuary - Pack Howling

We visited a wolf sanctuary this past weekend and one of the wolves started howling, which led to a symphony of howls from all 30 of the wolves. It was insane, and we were in one of the pack's cages right in the middle of it all.

Last Tuesday and Wednesday there was a powerful volcanic eruption at Mount Etna in Italy. The eruption sent fountains of lava high into the air and caused heavy fallout of ash along the northeastern flank of the volcano. The eruption was caught on film by Klaus Dorschfeldt.

Lyric videos are all over YouTube like a rash. Record companies love 'em. And for good reason.

They're very cheap, compared to a full video. They can be released earlier, which means there's more than a static picture for the many people who mainly listen to music through YouTube. And they separate the official release from all the unofficial fan videos that inevitably pop up.

Lyric videos are older than that, though. There's an argument that Bob Dylan's 1965 Subterranean Homesick Blues counts as one.

In 1987, Prince's video for Sign O The Times was perhaps the first proper lyric video. Just pulsing shapes and moving words, complete with the slightly dodgy punctuation and abbreviations that you'd see from an amateur video today.

And in 1990, George Michael's "Praying for Time" just had classy white text on a black background. That wouldn't look out of place if it'd been put together a quarter of a century later in Windows Movie Maker.

The modern, professional lyric video can trace its roots back to kinetic, or dynamic, typography. Inspired by, among others, the movie titles of designer Saul Bass, there was a YouTube trend for taking famous scenes from films and animating the dialogue. Jarratt Moody's dynamic 'Pulp Fiction' scene stole the show here.

That led to a trend through 2010 for animated lyrics - most notably a gorgeous and painstakingly-animated video for Jonathan Coulton's Shop Vac uploaded in November 2010. But by then, Katy Perry's management had started releasing simple lyric videos - just subtitles on a photo background. These were to compete with the fans, who'd been putting up unofficial ones for years. These unofficial videos often had inaccurate or mispelled lyrics, and in some cases - to get around YouTube's automated copyright systems - they'd speed up the music slightly, mangling the original track just so their lyric tribute could survive.

In 2010, Cee-Lo Green made the first mainstream, dynamic, and massively popular modern lyric video - for the song that middle America knew as 'Forget You'. And suddenly, everyone had to have one.

Some of them are amazing feats of design, and have brought the art of motion graphics back into the public eye. Some of them... are terrible. But as long as YouTube's around: well, they're here to stay.

DRM CHAIR

The DRM Chair has only a limited number of use before it self-destructs. The number of use was set to 8, so everyone could sit down and enjoy a single time the chair.

A small sensor detects when someone sits and decrements a counter. Every time someone sits up, the chair knocks a number of time to signal how many uses are left. When reaching zero, the self-destruct system is turned on and the structural joints of the chair are melted.
This was a 48h-long project, from concept to final video shooting.

NASA SDO - Fiery Looping Rain on the Sun

Eruptive events on the Sun can be wildly different. Some come just with a solar flare, some with an additional ejection of solar material called a coronal mass ejection (CME), and some with complex moving structures in association with changes in magnetic field lines that loop up into the Sun's atmosphere, the corona.

On July 19, 2012, an eruption occurred on the sun that produced all three. A moderately powerful solar flare exploded on the Sun's lower right hand limb, sending out light and radiation. Next came a CME, which shot off to the right out into space. And then, the Sun treated viewers to one of its dazzling magnetic displays -- a phenomenon known as coronal rain.

Colour Mixing: The Mystery of Magenta

Why doesn't magenta appear in the rainbow? The answer lies not in physics but in biology.

Science presenter Steve Mould demonstrates the strange phenomenon of colour mixing, in which not everything is as it seems. The cone cells within our eyes are responsible for the colours we see, but are only sensitive to Red, Green and Blue light. So how are we able to see so many colours when we can only directly detect three and how do our brains see the colour magenta which doesn't have a wavelength?

Steve explains all with the help of his coloured torches and explores how everyday technology fools our brains into seeing more.

Hitchcock talking about Psycho - admits it was a comedy

Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, voted the scariest movie of all time, was supposed to be a comedy designed to make audiences "giggle with pleasure", a new collection of BBC interviews reveal. The film, widely regarded as the world's first 'slasher' movie, terrified and shocked cinemagoers when it opened in 1960. It contained unprecedented levels of violence and sexuality, and its infamous 'shower scene' — of a woman being brutally murdered — was later named the 'Best Death' in modern cinematography. But newly-unearthed interviews from the BBC archives shed fresh light upon the British director's real intentions.

Utah Plane Crash Captured on Cell Phone by Passenger

I was up for a birthday flight with my wife (her first flight ever), her mother and my seven month old boy when we received the shocking news that our carburator had iced over. After gliding over some field we found an ideal place to land the plane. The pilot was experienced in field landings but unfortunately the snow caused the landing gear to sever from the plane, flipping the plane front to back and smashing the tail before it came to a rest upside down. No one was hurt in the accident save for bruises, whiplash and minor cuts.

Simultaneity - Albert Einstein and the Theory of Relativity

Imagine two observers, one seated in the center of a speeding train car, and another standing on the platform as the train races by. As the center of the car passes the observer on the platform, he sees two bolts of lightning strike the car - one on the front, and one on the rear. The flashes of light from each strike reach him at the same time, so he concludes that the bolts were simultaneous, since he knows that the light from both strikes traveled the same distance at the same speed, the speed of light. He also predicts that his friend on the train will notice the front strike before the rear strike, because from her perspective on the platform the train is moving to meet the flash from the front, and moving away from the flash from the rear.

But what does the passenger see? As her friend on the platform predicted, the passenger does notice the flash from the front before the flash from the rear. But her conclusion is very different. As Einstein showed, the speed of the flashes as measured in the reference frame of the train must also be the speed of light. So, because each light pulse travels the same distance from each end of the train to the passenger, and because both pulses must move at the same speed, he can only conclude one thing: if he sees the front strike first, it actually happened first.

Whose interpretation is correct - the observer on the platform, who claims that the strikes happened simultaneously, or the observer on the train, who claims that the front strike happened before the rear strike? Einstein tells us that both are correct, within their own frame of reference. This is a fundamental result of special relativity: From different reference frames, there can never be agreement on the simultaneity of events

By highlighting different wavelengths of light, scientists can track how material on the sun moves. Such movement, in turn, holds clues as to what causes these giant explosions.

2012 DA14 Asteroid close approach - Extended

On February 15, a 45-meter wide asteroid known as "2012 DA14" will pass within 20,000 miles of Earth, which is approximately 1/12th of the way to the Moon and well within range of many Earth-orbiting satellites. While scientists don't anticipate a collision with Earth, it could make for some fantastic skywatching for space geeks in certain parts of the world.

To capture the event, AGI aerospace engineers have used our Systems Tool Kit(STK) software to create an animation showing:
-2012 DA14's deep space trajectory as it approaches Earth
-The pass by Earth below the GEO Belt and crossing the equatorial plane from South to North
-A closeup of the asteroid during its closest approach
-A highlighted portion of Earth orbit that it is expected to pass through

This is my "Full Moon Silhouettes" short, as seen originally on Vimeo. It is a real time video of the moon rising over the Mount Victoria Lookout in Wellington, New Zealand. People had gathered up there this night to get the best view possible of the moon rising. I captured the video from 2.1km away on the other side of the city. It's something that I've been wanting to photograph for a long time now, and a lot of planning and failed attempts had taken place. Finally, during moon rise on the 28th January 2013, everything fell into place and I got my footage.

NOAA: Touring the Ocean Bottom

The ocean -- it is the most prominent feature on Earth, and of immeasurable importance to life on the planet. But what would it look like if all of the water was drained out of it? Mountains and valleys that dwarf Everest; shifting plates and undersea volcanoes; seams, ripples, and plains. Though ships have mapped only a small portion of the ocean floor, satellites are used to generate incredibly details maps of the bottom of the ocean. By sensing the minute gravitational changes that pull, push, and bulge the ocean surface, the bottom's shape can be inferred from space. These bathymetric maps reveal the incredibly dynamic terrain of the ocean. Where available, ship-based measurements are included to provide even higher detail.

For The Birds and Marnie (Hitchcock's second an last fim with Hedren), Hitchcock dictated every aspect of Tippi's look on and off screen. Hitchcocks vision was meticulously carried out by legendary costume designer Edith Head, Howard Smit on Make-up and Hairdresser Virginia Darcy.
